The Detroit Grand Prix started downtown in the city center in 1982.

1991 was the last race held downtown. In 1992 the race moved to Belle Isle, still within sight of the Detroit city skyline.

A number of different types of vehicles race during the annual weekend event. Above are closed cockpit sports cars.

The original downtown race was for FIA Formula One. The Indy Cars replaced the Grand Prix circus in 1989.

Even the off-road trucks race on the track, with jumps and other obstacles added.
