The track opened in 1963, but was closed for almost 20 years from 1975-1995. |
The track was once owned by Dick Clark. Yes, the same Dick Clark of American Bandstand and New Year's Rockin' Eve fame. |
The track has had many names, including Huntington International Speedway, Dick Clark's International Raceway Park, and West Virginia International Speedway. |
NASCAR Cup raced here four times, in 1963-64 and 1970-71. Fred Lorenzen won the first, and Richard Petty the other three. |

Comments: Robert Lamond: When I was kidnapped by my parents and taken away from eastern PA, (think Reading, Dorney, Grand view, and Allentown Fairground), and held hostage in Barborsville (Huntington), WV, this was the only local track that I was aware of at the time. I went there a few times and boy was that an eye opener. Those visits taught me that as a kid growing up where I had to that point, in Allentown, I was spoiled by some of the very best short track racing ANYWHERE. Ken Harper: Ona's review in '08 speedway directory was very intriguing . Robert Lamond: BTW, I lived there from Oct., 1973 through the end of 1977. |
